Class Policies – updated 04/15/15

• All classes must be registered for and class fees must be paid in advance to secure your spot.
• If you cannot make a class for which you have registered, please let us know within 12 hours of the start time of the class and we can move you to a different class or provide you with store credit. If you do not make prior arrangements, you will forfeit your class fee.
• Classes start promptly, so please be on time.
• Unless previous arrangements have been made, if you are more than 20 minutes late, you forfeit your place in class and your fees.
• Cell phones are disruptive to our instructors and to other students. Please turn off your cell phones or take your call outside.
• If Yarn Asylum cancels your class for any reason, we will refund your money or reschedule your class.
• Most class fees do not include the cost of materials, which must be purchased at Yarn Asylum.
• Classes are for paid and registered students only. Please do not bring children or guests to class with you.
• If you need to purchase your materials on the day of the class, please arrive early to allow ample shopping time BEFORE class begins. If you already own the appropriate needles, hooks, etc., such items do not need to be purchased from Yarn Asylum for your class. However, if our instructor feels that your learning is being inhibited by poor quality tools, they may ask you to purchase something more appropriate.

Important Note: Many multiple session classes require students to complete homework to prepare for the next session. Instructors will discuss those expectations during class.

Knitting 101 – Beginner

This class is for the absolute beginner who would like to start with a small project. This is also a perfect project for someone who would like to brush up on their fundamental knitting skills.

Project: Basic knitted washcloth

Techniques: Students will learn the long tail cast on, knit & purl stitches and then learn to bind off. These techniques are the building blocks for all knitting projects.

Skills Required: A desire to learn something new!

Pattern: Easy Knit Washcloth. A copy will be provided to all students.

Supplies: 
1 skein Cascade UltraPima Cotton (included in the price of the class)
Size 7 knitting needles
Darning/Tapestry Needle

Cost: $40 for two 2-hour sessions



Knitting 102 – Beginner

This class is the next step after our Knitting 101 class.

Project: Basic knitted washcloth

Techniques: In this class, students will learn several new technique stitches – including k2tog, ssk and yo. You will also learn more about reading patterns.

Skills Required: Students should be familiar with casting on and the knit & purl stitches.

Pattern: Big Diamond Washcloth – a copy will be provided to all students.

Supplies: 
1 skein Cascade UltraPima Cotton (included in the price of the class)
Size 7 knitting needles – circular or straight
Stitch markers
Darning/tapestry needle

Cost: $40 for two 2-hour sessions
First class begins Saturday, April 1st at 10:30am.

 



Beginner Reversible Scarf – Beginner

Wheat ScarfThis class is for the adventurous beginner who would like to start with a simple scarf project as they learn the basics of knitting. Students will construct a reversible scarf using the garter stitch and 1 x 1 ribbing. (Homework will be required to complete this scarf in two sessions.)

Techniques: Learn to cast on, knit & purl stitches and binding off. Once you have mastered these basic skills, you are prepared to take on any knitted project!

Skills Required: A desire to learn something new!

Pattern: Wheat Scarf. A copy will be provided to all students.

Drop Stitch Scarf – Advanced Beginner

In this class, you will learn it is okay to intentionally drop stitches to make a beautiful drop stitch scarf.

Techniques: The perfect pattern to begin to learn lace work. Yarn overs and dropped stitches.

Skills Required: A desire to learn something new! Students should be familiar with casting on, knitting and purling.

Pattern: Drop Stitch Scarf. A copy will be provided to all students.

Fingerless Mittens

In this class the student will be instructed to make a pair of fingerless mittens that are knit in the round using Magic Loop technique.

Techniques: Learn to use double point needles while knitting mitts in the round. k2tog, yarn overs and m1(make 1 stitch).

Skills Required: Students should be familiar with casting on and knit & purl stitches.

Pattern: Susie Roger’s Reading Mitts. A copy will be provided to all students.

Christmas Stocking

In this class, you will knit a Christmas stocking using charts, two colors and basic sock construction. This is an intermediate class for the beginner intarsia student.

Pattern: Snowy Noel Stocking

Supplies: 
Worsted weight yarn in 2 colors (sample was made using Plymouth Encore)
Size 5 & 6 needles – 16 inch circular and dpns
Size H crochet hook

Basic Hat Class – Beginner

Techniques: This class is for the beginning knitter who would like to expand their knitting knowledge.

Skills Required: Students should be familiar with casting on and the knit & purl stitches.

Pattern: Every day knit hat pattern – pattern will be provided to all students.

BAA-BLE Hat

BAA-BLE (One size to fit average adult head 20-22 inches)

Knit an adorable color work hat using 4 colors.

Techniques: This class is for intermediate knitters that want to expand their knitting knowledge to include color work.

Skills Required: Students should be familiar with knitting in the round, 2×2 ribbing, and decreasing stitches with K2TOG

Cable Hat

Skills Required: Students should be familiar with the knit and purl stitches as well as knitting in the round and 2×2 ribbing.

Pattern: Travel. A copy will be provided for all students.

Socks using Magic Loop – Intermediate

Learn how to knit basic ribbed socks using 1 circular needle. This is an excellent class for a beginning sock knitter or someone who wants to try their hand at using circular needles. Students will make a pair of socks knitted from the cuff down.

Techniques: Learn to knit socks in the round (cuff down) on one 40” inch needle and finish the toe with the Kitchener stitch.

Skills Required: Students should be familiar with casting on, knit & purl stitches, increases, decreases and picking up stitches.

Pattern: Basic ribbed sock. A copy will be provided to all students

Supplies: 
Fingering weight/Sock weight yarn
1 size 3 circular needle with 40″ cable

Socks on Two Circular Needles – Intermediate

Baby Surprise Jacket – Advanced Beginner

From the genius of Elizabeth Zimmerman, some say this jacket is essentially a rectangle with shaping. It will not look like a sweater while you’re knitting it, but be assured that it does, indeed, fold up into a jacket! You will learn simple shaping (with increases and decreases), picking up stitches, and sewing seams. Sizing is determined by the yarn and needles chosen.

Yarn recommended for class – 350 yards of fingering-weight yarn to fit newborn (up to 3 months)

Class Description: This class is for beginning crocheters who would like to advance their skills. Students will learn the thermal stitch, slip stitch, how to maintain straight edges and how to change colors.

Class Description: Learning basic skills for spinning singles yarn on a drop spindle, including starting a leader, joining fiber ends together and drafting.

Needle Felting for Beginners

Class Description: Learn to felt with a single needle using a form (Cookie Cutter). You can choose a pumpkin or Fall leaf. You will go home with your needle, foam and cutter to use on future projects.

Weaving: Beyond Tabby; Hand Manipulated Weave

Class Description: In this class you will learn to manipulate yarn to give you a wider range of technique and set of skills on the rigid heddle loom.

Pattern Name: Brooks Bouquet and 2:2 Leno patterns in the “Weaver’s Idea Book”.

Supplies: 
Rigid Heddle Loom; warped in your color or colors of choice.
Weft yarn; recommended Cascade Yarns 22 Superwash (Contrasting yarns work best

Weaving: Beyond Tabby; 8 Row Pinwheels for Rigid Heddle Weaving

Class Description: In this class you will learn to weave Pinwheels on a rigid heddle loom using a pick-up stick and how to read a pick-up stick pattern.

Pattern Name: 8 Row Pinwheels handout (to be provided by instructor).

Class preparation: Please warp your loom prior to class.
Warp length = 100 inches, 72 ends alternating 9 groups of 8 strands per color (8 dark, 8 light, 8 dark, 8 light, etc.)

Supplies Needed: 
15 inch Cricket Loom with 8 dent heddle.
Weft yarn; recommended Cascade Yarns 220 Superwash (Contrasting yarns work best)
Pick Up Stick
2 Shuttles
Two High contrast worsted weight yarns (220 yards each)

Skills Necessary: Basic warping and weaving on a rigid heddle loom.
