Building Blocks – improve your knitting skills one square at a time!

[slideshow_deploy id=’704′]

Yarn Asylum is excited to announce the introduction of
the Building Blocks knitting series!

The designer of this program is Michelle Hunter of Knit Purl Hunter.  She describes the program perfectly:  ‘Building Blocks was created to move the new knitter beyond the basics by introducing the major knitting techniques in a systematic approach.  Each block builds upon the skills of the previous block, allowing the knitter to gain confidence and knowledge while working toward a beautiful sampler afghan.’

Whether you are a new knitter looking to expand your skills or a seasoned knitter who would enjoy the camaraderie of a group of like-minded fiber enthusiasts – this program is for you!

Join us on the 2nd and 4th Wednesday each month from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm as we knit our way through this well written and wonderfully illustrated book of 12 different patterns.  Everyone will work at their own pace.  Although you will be expected to work on your squares at home, there are no deadlines or time limits to finish. This is stress-free learning at its best!  Participates can join at any time.

Ideally, you will complete a square each month and at the end of a year – you will have a beautiful afghan to showcase all your new knitting knowledge!

You can decide to make your afghan squares all different colors, a solid color, or anything in between.  The choice is yours!  It is knit up using a worsted weight yarn and we have a wide selection for you to choose from.  Our suggestions include HiKoo SimpliWorsted, Cascade 220 Superwash, Plymouth Encore and Berroco Vintage.

We are pleased to offer you this program – with assistance on all techniques – absolutely FREE of charge!  In order to participate – you MUST purchase your supplies from Yarn Asylum.

Our our next workshop will be on Wednesday, April 27th from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm. Drop by Yarn Asylum soon to pick out your yarn and pick up your copy of the Building Blocks book.  Although there is not a class fee, we do ask that you register so that we know how many knitters will join us.  If you can’t make it to every meeting – that is okay too!

Remember that this is open to knitters of ALL skill levels!  We just ask that you join us with the intention of having a good time while learning and sharing!  If you have any questions:  visit out Frequently Asked Questions here, drop by, email us or give us a call.  We are here to enable!

What is Building Blocks?

The Building Block Workshop program is a method of increasing your knitting skills by creating one afghan block at a time.  The blocks are knit in squares that are joined together to make a 3’ x 4’ afghan when all are completed.  The blocks start off with easy knit and purl stitches.  Each subsequent block adds different techniques that build your skills!  You will learn techniques such as right and left twists, reading charts, cables, bobble stitches and much more!

When do you meet?

We meet the 2nd and 4th Wednesday of each month.  Workshop times are from 5:30 pm to 7:30 pm.

(Upcoming dates:  March 23rd, April 13th, April 27th, May 11th, and May 25th)

Dates will always be listed on the website calendar.

How much yarn do I need?

You will need a total of 1400 yards of worsted weight yarn.  The number of skeins/balls/hanks of yarn necessary will depend on how much yarn is packaged in the skein/balls/hanks.  If you choose to make your blocks different colors – your yardage may vary.

Can I bring my own yarn?

No.  In order to participate in this FREE workshop, we do request that purchase the book and yarn from Yarn Asylum.  That is fair, right?
Do I have to buy the book?

Yes, you will need the book of patterns in order to participate.  Please do not ask us to copy the patterns for you.  It is illegal and just wrong.

How much is the book?

The book is $19.95 and full of colorful illustrations, clearly written instructions and links to helpful videos.

Do I have to come to every Workshop?

Not at all!  You can attend as many or few workshops as you would like.  We will be covering new topics during each workshop, so the more you can attend – the more you will learn!  We will also be going back over previous topics so that everyone can get/stay caught up!

Is it too late to start?

Heck no!  You can begin your afghan at any time!  Everyone will be working at their own speed, so you will be sharing the time with other knitters at all levels.

What skills should I have in order to participate?

You need to know how to do the long tail cast on, knit & purl.  These are the basic beginning skills.  If you have never knitted before or need a refresher in these areas, please sign up for one of our Knitting 101 classes.  Once you have mastered these very basic techniques, you will be on your way!

How big is the completed afghan?

The afghan is comprised of 12 squares.  When the squares are knitted to gauge – they measure 12” by 12”.  When the squares are completed and sewn together, the afghan will measure approximately 3 feet by 4 feet.  Please note that some yarn will produce larger or smaller squares – depending on the thickness of the yarn.  Your overall finished size will reflect that difference.

How much does the yarn cost?

The cost of the yarn depends on which yarn you choose.  We have very budget friendly acrylic blends and more costly super-wash wool.  And everything in between!

Can I come in and get help on my afghan at any time?

We ask that you save your questions to bring up during the Workshop meetings.  All participants will learn from your questions and concerns.
